Humble Beginnings

Nebraska Furniture Mart was founded in 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska by Belarusian immigrant Rose Blumkin. Rose, well known as “Mrs. B.”, was born as Rose Gorelick near Minsk, Belarus in 1893. When she was twenty years old, Rose was married to Isadore Blumkin. In 1917, the Blumkins immigrated to the United States, before finally settling in Omaha, Nebraska in 1919. In Omaha, Mrs. B. opened up a used clothing store until 1937, when the first Nebraska Furniture Mart opened in the basement of her husband’s shop. The business grew to become the largest indoor furniture store in the United States. In 1970, the company expanded outside Nebraska, but the terrible economy of the late 1970s forced the company to consolidate back to its one, original store. In 1983, Rose Blumkin sold 90% of the business to entrepreneur Warren Buffett for $60 million. She even opened up a rival company but was forced to sell it to Buffett because of a rival clause in the contract of the original sale of NFM. Mrs. B. stayed involved in day-to-day operations until her death at the age of 104 in 1998. The company once again began expanding in 2001, by opening up a store in Des Moines, Iowa. Another store was opened in Kansas City in 2004. A Texas store began construction in 2015.
